Air Seal System
All Yamaha wood drums have one thing in common. Our craftsmen create every drum shell using our exclusive staggered diagonal seam, Air Seal System just as they have since 1967. Each two or three-ply “master ply” is cut to length to very precise tolerance with a diagonal cut on each end. The diagonal seam in the drum shell will not separate, eliminating the need to fill gaps in the bearing edge with filler putty. These plies have glue applied and are then put into the mold by hand, one master play at a time. The craftsman then inserts an air bag into the mold and inflates it, “clamping” the shell with even pressure 360 degrees around. This process creates a shell that is strong, starts round, and stays round for many years. |
100% Maple Shell
Tour Custom drum shells are 100% maple. The bass drums are 7-ply 7mm and have a warm, deep tone; the toms are 6-ply 6mm, with lots of warmth and resonance and have a wide tuning range. The matching wood snare drum has body, yet plenty of high end and is very articulate at all dynamic levels.
“Universal” Size Drums
Tour Custom drums are available in Yamaha’s ‘universal” sizes. This ratio of diameter to depth makes these drums versatile enough for any musical situation. The bass drums have low-end punch but are responsive, the toms have lots of power, yet great sustain. The 14”x6” matching wood snare drum has a very wide tuning range and great sensitivity so it is right at home on the road playing large venues or around town on a club date.
60 Degree Bearing Edges
All Tour Custom drums have 60-degree R2 bearing edges. This is something new for Yamaha on a maple shell drum set. This bearing edge has a rounder profile so that there is more shell to head contact. This gives the drums clarity in the low-end fundamental and added warmth.
Bass Drum Spurs
Sturdy, yet simple in design; the bass drum spurs hold the bass drum firmly in place even under heavy playing. They are height adjustable using a drum key, and there are steel spikes that can be exposed when extra hold is needed. They fold op compact for transport and are marked with angle indicators so that you can set them up the same every time.
YESS Tom and Floor Tom Brackets
All Tour Custom toms and floor toms use the YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System). The toms have a mount attached to the shell at the nodal point by two bolts. This system allows the drum shell to vibrate freely for maximum sustain without restricting with where the placement of the drums. The floor tom brackets are small, minimal contact mounts that are located at the nodal point. They hold the legs securely in place without restricting the vibration of the shell.
Ball Clamp and Triple Tom Holder
Tour Custom drum sets includes the TH-945 triple tom holder with our tom ball clamp that gives you 360-degree rotation. The ball, made of a super-hard resin, is held in place by a single bolt making angle adjustments on the toms quick and easy. The toms lock firmly in place at virtually any angle you want. This versatile tom holder lets you mount any combination of up to three toms and/or cymbals by using either the standard or the long version of our tom ball clamp and CH model cymbal booms.
Two Hardware Options
Tour Custom drum sets are available in any of the three suggested configurations with our 800 series double-braced hardware for going on the road, or our popular 700 series single-braced hardware for gigging around town. You can also get Tour Custom as a shell-pack with drums only or custom order your drum set ala carte from a full range of available component drums.
Four Beautiful Lacquer Finishes
Tour Custom drums are all finished in high-gloss lacquer, three translucent and one solid finish. The Brown Sunburst (BSB), Ocean Blue (OCB), and Sakura White (SAW) allow the beauty of the maple grain show through. The Black Onyx (BKO) is a deep, rich, solid black finish.

OAK CUSTOM
Air Seal System for Superior Shells
The use of our original Air Seal System is, in part, responsible for the superior quality found in Yamaha drum shells. Select woods are cut into plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. The resulting shells are perfectly round and of uniform thickness delivering superior tone quality and exceptional durability.
|
All Oak Shell
Utilization of Yamaha's Air Seal system allows for the first time use of oak in a drum shell. As in our Maple and Birch series, this process delivers a shell that's perfectly round, with uniform thickness and excellent durability. The bass drum shell is 7-plys while the toms and floor tom shells are 6-plys. All shells throughout the entire range deliver a solid fundamental and powerful sound.
|
Oak Shells are Universal Sizes
Oak Custom shell depths are sized in between our "jazz" depth and "power" depth drums. The universal size allows for maximum projection while maintaining strong attack. Bass drums are available in 18"x15" and 20", 22", and 24" diameters with a universal 17" depth. The added depth enhances the oak's tone with greater bottom end and more power.
Floor toms come in conventional sizes (14"x14", 16"x16", and 18"x16")
|
Sleek, Low-Mass Lugs
These small, oval-shaped lugs are easily attached to the shell with a single bolt. Small footprints offer minimum lug to shell contact allowing the shell to deliver maximum tone. A special nylon insert prevents tension rods from becoming loose during play.
|
Floating Bass Drum System
Height adjustment on the pedal side of the bass drum is possible with the pipe post stabilizer. Use of this system ensures that the beater makes contact at the center of the head. The stabilizer fits into a pipe clamp on the underside of the drum that allows quick and easy adjustment of the height. The post is equipped with a memory clamp that ensures subsequent settings will be quick and precise every time.
|
Bass Drum Spurs
A sturdy hexagonal design and fixed angle position allow our spurs to withstand the punishment of even the heaviest bass drum foot. For the Oak Custom we made the spurs heavier and even stronger. Height adjustment and the releasing and retracting of the pointed spur are made easily with a drum key.
|
Mounted Toms and Floor Toms Equipped with YESS Mounts
Long found on our high-end drum kits our original YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System) mounting system is on all Oak Custom toms and floor toms. This rod clamp system allows attachment of the drum to the tom holder without the need of a hole in the drum shell for the rod to pass through. The YESS clamp is attached to the shell at the nodal point with two bolts so as to allow the shell to vibrate freely without degrading the shell's dynamic range and sustain. The nodal point is the location on a shell with the least amount of vibration allowing for the mount to have minimal affect to the resonance of the shell.
|
Ball Clamp & Triple Tom Holder
This round ball clamp has long been a fundamental part of Yamaha System Drums. Made of super-hard resin, the ball is held firmly in place with a steel plate and large wing bolt. While providing ease of operation, this system also delivers total freedom in setting and superior stability.
The triple tom holder accommodates two toms as well as a cymbal holder to provide a wide variety of set up possibilities.

ABSOLUTE SERIES BIRCH
Air Seal System for Superior Shells
The use of our original Air Seal System is, in part, responsible for the superior quality found in Yamaha drum shells. Select woods are cut into plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. The resulting shells are perfectly round and of uniform thickness delivering superior tone quality and exceptional durability.
All Birch Shell
In production for over 25 years, our world famous Recording Custom series has given our craftsmen a deep understanding of the characteristics of birch. It is with that knowledge that we have been able to extract a richer sound from these new drums. The shells are manufactured using our exclusive Air Seal System. This technique, while enhancing the characteristics of the wood, also ensures that every drum shell is perfectly round, of uniform thickness, and creates a stronger, more durable shell. Producing clear mid-and low-tones with sharp, solid highs, the Absolute Birch is sure to create a new standard for birch shell sound.
Birch Shells and the Vintage Finish
The Vintage finish is a special synthetic resin finish that is applied by hand on high-quality wind instruments. While enhancing the tone of the birch shell, the Vintage finish also provides a durable, waterproof finish that virtually eliminates the influence of weather and humidity on the drum. Over the course of time, the color of the shell will change to a deeper hue that you will surely love.
Floating Bass Drum System
Height adjustment on the pedal side of the 18" bass drum is possible with the pipe post stabilizer. Use of this system ensures that the beater makes contact at the center of the head. The stabilizer fits into a pipe clamp on the underside of the drum that allows quick and easy adjustment of the height. The post is equipped with a memory clamp that ensures subsequent settings will be quick and precise every time, while a pair of supports provides added stability.
Lugs
The unique chrome body lug casings found on the Absolute series are fixed to the drum shell with only a single bolt allowing the drum to vibrate freely. A special nylon insert prevents tension rods from becoming loose during play.
Aluminum Die Cast Hoops
The aluminum die cast hoops give these drums the benefit of accurate tuning that die cast hoops are known for but are much lighter weight than zinc so they do not choke the drum like zinc die cast hoops do. They allow the drum to open up much like a triple-flanged hoop.
Bass Drum Spurs
A sturdy hexagonal design and fixed angle position allow our spurs to withstand bass drum kicks. For the Absolute Birch we made the spurs heavier and even stronger. Height adjustment and the releasing and retracting of the pointed spur are made easily with a drum key.
Die Cast BD Claws
All new Absolute bass drums come with die cast claws that are lined with plastic so they won't scratch the hoop or rattle if they are loose. The claw has a nylon insert that keeps the claw and tension rod from separating so you don't have loose parts getting lost when changing heads.
Mounted Toms and Floor Toms Equipped with YESS Mounts
| Long found on our high-end drum kits our original YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System) mounting system is on all Absolute Birch toms and floor toms. | PHOENIX SERIES |
Shells
The shells of the PHX are 11-ply hybrid shells. The woods used are progressively harder from the center ply to the outer plies. The center ply is jatoba; this is a very hard wood' and it "anchors" the fundamental of the shell. Sandwiched on either side of this is kapur. This wood is in the mahogany family and adds warmth to the sound of the drum. The inner and outer plies are maple, except in the case of drums using the optional burled ash outer ply. These drums use an outer half-ply each of maple and burled ash. Maple rounds out the tone adding high and mid frequencies to the shell.
Bearing edges
All drums have a 30° bearing edge, but each "family" of drums uses a different profile. Bass drums have a sharper edge cut toward the outer plies. This gives the bass drums attack and shortens the decay. Floor toms have a slightly rounded edge to give them a perfect balance of attack and sustain, making them very articulate at all dynamic levels. Toms have an even more rounded profile for warmth and sustain. This combination of shell composition and bearing edges makes PHX what many of our artists described as "the most musical drums [they] have ever played".
Hardware
PHX uses redesigned versions of the Nouveau lug and YESS. The new lug mounts on a square hook rather than a round post. This keeps the tension rod in perfect vertical alignment and eliminates the need to use two hands while tuning the drum. We used the aluminum die-cast hoops made popular on our Absolute series for PHX. These hoops are very light but rigid, giving you the open, warm sound of a triple-flanged hoop and the accurate tuning of a die-cast hoop. Lugs and hoops are available in chrome or gold.
The new version of the YESS mounting system supports the drum at the top and bottom. The new version mounts the tom bracket onto a piece of the shell, and that wooden plate is isolated or shock-mounted using rubber grommets. A 3-piece fastening system is used to attach the new YESS to the shell, and the inside and outside fasteners do not touch. This system totally isolates the drum and allows the full tone to come through and maximizes sustain. |
Finishes
PHX is available with either maple and burled ash exterior plies, and with gold or chrome hardware. The finishes available on the maple outer ply are:
- Matte Natural
- Matte Black
- Polar White
- Cherry Sunburst
The finishes available on the burled ash are:
- Garnet Fade
- Sapphire Fade
- Turquoise Fade
- Textured Amber Sunburst

EXTREME III SPECIAL

| We enlisted the help of several of our drum artists, and looked at the requests from consumers to make sure that our new module meets the needs of e-drummers at all levels. The most important feature in an electronic drum set is the sound. We began by sampling our most popular acoustic drums, the legendary Recording Custom and Maple Custom. Then we added the groundbreaking Oak Custom and industry standard Maple, Birch, and Beech Absolute. We then sampled many of our most popular artist snare drums and cymbals from all the major manufacturers. We combined these, along with samples of percussion instruments from around the world and dozens of special effects to create 50 pre-programmed kits.
When you want to customize your sound, you can take any of over 1,000 internal drum, percussion, special effects voices and loops to create up to fifty user kits. Insert a USB stick and you can save another 1,584 kits. Taking it even further, you can assign any MIDI channel to each pad, giving you access to over 200 melodic GM voices that you can trigger from any pad. With the optional DIMM, you have 512mb of sampling memory allowing an additional 1,016 user voices.
There are 15 trigger inputs, 14 of which will accept three-zone pads. Input 10/11 is able to accept two mono pads by using a stereo splitter. For live performance or recording, there is a stereo pair of outputs, or six individual outputs that also function as three stereo pair, and an S/P DIF digital output. The Aux in allows you to plug an external music source in so that you can play along, or lets you sample directly into the module. There is a full-function sample editor so that you can tweak your samples once recorded. The MIDI in/out allow connection to other devices, and the USB and TO Host terminals allow easy connection to a computer. The USB also allows use of a flash drive to store and load user created data such as kits, samples, songs, and click settings.
The DXTIII has a fully programmable metronome on board, and to take your practice to the next level our Groove Check feature shows you if you are playing ahead of, on, or behind the click. An additional feature of the click, the Rhythm Gate, mutes any hit that is not in time. The width of this gate is adjustable and can track all triggers, or your choice of up to five triggers. The Groove Check and Rhythm Gate function with either the click or the internal sequencer.
The onboard two-track sequencer is loaded with great preset songs in many styles from rock, pop, blues, funk, Latin, and jazz. The sounds are from our famous MOTIF synthesizer so they sound amazing. You can mute the drums, bass, or rhythm/melody instruments to play along, and even record your own drum track to any preset song, and you can speed up or slow the tempo without changing the pitch. There are 50 user songs that you can record your own compositions, either from the pads or with an external MIDI device. There are also 40 pad songs that you can start and stop from any pad, up to four per kiT.
|

The DXTIIISP includes our revolutionary Hexrack featuring hexagonal tubing and tom clamps that rotate on a synthetic ball. We originally developed this rack system for use with our acoustic drums, so it is more than sturdy enough to handle duty with an electronic drum set. The clamps allow minute angle adjustments so the pad placement wherever you choose is easy. The kit also includes our updated 700 series SS-740A snare stand, HS-740A hi hat stand, (1) CH-750 and (2) CH755 cymbal booms. There are five different accessory clamps and three curved rack tubes available to allow you to customize your kit.

The DTXTREMEIII Special kit includes the TP120SD three-zone snare pad, (4) TP100 three-zone tom pads, (2) PCY135 three-zone cymbal pads, (1) PCY155 three-zone ride cymbal pad, the RHH135 hi hat, and the new KP125 kick drum trigger. The snare and tom pads have the onboard controller knob that allows trigger adjustment on the fly. You can adjust snare tension, or the pitch, voice assignment, song/click tempo, filter on the snare or toms. The new cymbal pads choke when you grab the edge, respond to the lightest touch, and feel great. The RHH135 attaches to the included hi hat stand using a modified clutch. The cymbal goes up and down like an acoustic hi hat cymbal, and is pressure sensitive so the pitch changes when the pedal is pushed. The KP125 has a large playing surface that feels like an acoustic drum, and easily accommodates a double pedal. The spurs on the new kick trigger hold the pad securely in place, even under the hardest playing.
